The Maldives government has announced plans to expand Velana International Airport to handle 7.5 million passengers per year, up from the current capacity of 2.6 million. The expansion will include a new runway, a new terminal building, and other improvements to the airport's infrastructure.

Velana International Airport has introduced a new biometric boarding system that uses facial recognition technology to speed up the boarding process. The system has been installed at all departure gates and has received positive feedback from passengers.
